Twitter card meta tags

X needs exactly one tag Open Graph can’t provide: twitter:card. Everything else (title, description, image) falls back to og: tags. Here are all the twitter: tags and when they are worth adding.

<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image" />
<meta name="twitter:site" content="@example" />
<meta name="twitter:image:alt" content="Chart of build time falling" />

Rules for twitter:card

  • twitter:card: summary, summary_large_image, app or player. Required.
  • twitter:site / twitter:creator: @handles for the site and the author.
  • twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image: only needed when you want X to differ from og: values.
  • twitter:image:alt: up to 420 characters.
  • Use name= (the documented form), not property=.

Common mistakes

  • Missing twitter:card, so X falls back to the small summary layout.
  • twitter:image pointing to an image over 5 MB.
  • Relative twitter:image URLs.

Write the full tag set in the generator, or see all tags in the Open Graph tag reference.

What are Twitter card meta tags?

Meta tags starting with twitter: that tell X how to render a link card. Only twitter:card is strictly required when Open Graph tags are present.

Yes. X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image when the twitter: equivalents are missing.

What is the difference between summary and summary_large_image?

summary shows a small square thumbnail beside the text; summary_large_image shows the image across the full width of the post.
